Course objectives

Companies are increasingly pressured to innovate more and manage uncertainty better. At the same time, they still need to run the business and meet regular performance goals. While both innovation and regular business activity require proper management, managerial approaches that will be successful in both cases are different. Based on bimodal approach developed by Gartner, the present course aims to introduce managerial approaches that help companies to manage innovations in the form of new product development.

The course focuses on practical managerial approaches that companies use to stimulate new product development. Starting from idea generation and selection and ending with scaling up of a new product, the course presents practices that innovative companies are implementing to stimulate innovation within the firm.

Entry requirements

Previous knowledge of management is beneficial for better understanding the course, but not required.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Bimodal framework of organization by Gartner
  • Idea generation and selection: desirability, viability and feasibility framework
  • Organizing for new product development: waterfall and scrum approaches
  • Managing and leading the team: members of innovation team, team development stages, how to manage the team
  • Controlling: Project Dashboards; Fixed Time, Fixed Budget, Flexible Scope framework; efficiency criteria of innovative projects
