Course objectives

Being successful in your job is not only the result of obtaining excellent data. It is equally
important to make other people understand that your data are in fact excellent and that you are
actually great in what you are doing. The main objective of the course is to provide theoretical
knowledge and to gain practical experience in presenting both yourself as well as your science in
the best possible way.
At the end of the course, you will have improved skills in:
a) Presenting your work and avoiding common mistakes
b) Using appropriate scientific language
c) Contacting potential employers and writing application letters including a CV

Teaching methods

The main aim of the course is not only to be aware of the theory behind the topics but to also
transfer the theory into reality. Therefore, interactive frontal lectures explaining the theoretical
background of the course topics will be followed by “real life” examples. These will be analysed
and evaluated in working groups and subsequently discussed together in feedback sessions. The
participants will put together a short presentation on a recent scientific issue/topic according to
criteria taught beforehand. Presentations will be held in class and discussed. Teaching material will
include ppt, movies, blackboard, flipchart, handouts and recordings.
