Minimizing dependence on the private car for personal mobility is a particularly significant challenge for mountainous and hilly regions. In some settlements, characterized by steep orographic variations, cycling and walking cannot be the only sustainable solutions to connect the valley floor to the hills.
The challenge is to find innovative, creative and at the same time feasible solutions to realize sustainable mobility connections and enhance the biodiversity of the urban ecosystem.
In the city of Trento, an area in which the natural and anthropic environment contrast and merge, a new and exciting phase of change is opening up in the area of mobility. Within this framework, it is necessary to support people in overcoming geographical, orographic differences, addressing environmental, social and economic objectives.
Today’s and tomorrow’s planners have a responsibility to respond to people’s primary need for mobility by taking multiple factors into account. First and foremost, the environmental factor, not only intended as sustainability of traveling in terms of infrastructure, means of transport, CO2 produced, etc., but also as protection and enhancement of biodiversity, in terms of green corridors, reduced land consumption, integration of biophilic systems, etc.
The proposed challenge will take place in the city of Trento and calls for the identification of links and connections between the valley floor and the hilly areas to enable the mobility of people, in a historical era in which resources, including economic ones, are limited. It calls for a multidisciplinary approach to planning that also takes into account the socio-economic context.
Participants will receive information on current and planned infrastructural interventions in the city, as well as a demographic, social and economic overview. They will also be able to discover some of the locations of the city’s future transformations.
The challenge is composed of one week in-presence in Trento and three weeks of activities organized online. Attendance of all activities is compulsory to get the final credits.
