Yannis Velegrakis is a faculty member at the University of Trento, where he is leading the Data Management Group. He is also the coordinator of the Data and Knowledge Management Research Program, of the CINI Big Data Laboratory, and of the EIT Digital MSc Program. His research area of expertise includes Big Data Understanding, Highly Heterogeneous Information Integration, Recommendation, Graph Management, and Data Quality. A common thread in his work is the development and application of rigorous foundations on building robust systems for solving real-world problems. He holds a PhD degree in Computer science from the University of Toronto. Before joining the University of Trento, he was a researcher at the AT&T Research Labs serving as a technical lead for projects on integration of telecommunication data. He has spent time as a visitor at the IBM Almaden Research Centre where he worked on the development of the first Schema Mapping tool, and the University of California, Santa-Cruz working on Mapping System Benchmarks. His research work has been published in top international database conferences, such as, VLDB, SIGMOD, ICDE, EDBT, CIKM, and has been recognised through a Marie Curie and a Université Paris-Saclay Jean D’Alembert fellowship. In 2013 he served as a General Chair for the International Conference on Very Large Data Bases (VLDB), and in 2018 as a PC Area chair for ICDE. He holds 3 US patents.
